Well there is certainly now more than a mere flurry of activity here at Squirrel Run – the land of plenty. We spotted one of our resident ground hogs bounding up the driveway yesterday afternoon, no doubt on his/her way to a drink of cool water in the little water feature by the house (a frequented spot for many local critters). The male Carpenter bees are fully on task at staking out their territory, forcefully protecting it from other males and awaiting their mates. One has chosen our front porch as a spot of interest and greets us, albeit gently to our good fortune, as we pass by on our way in and out. He is far too busy with his own species to bother much with ours. The Mud Dauber wasps are building their beautifully sculptured homes and, fortunately for all involved, are under construction in a remote area outside of the house this year. We have seen young bunnies and squirrels venturing out to discover their new world. The trees to leaf out the latest, like the black walnut, have finally burst forth to meet the rest of the new bright greenery of their neighbors. And the oaks have put on such a display of catkins that they bring a heady promise of a bumper crop of acorns in the fall. We witnessed quite a brief but serious drama play out over us at noon today. We saw a Red-Tailed Hawk, remarkable because of its slightly smaller size than we are used to seeing and revealing a noticeably lighter color morph than the standard for this species. As we were appreciating its beauty and grace in the sky, a crow lifted up from the field below and set to the chase on this hawk’s tail. The crow flew passed and then pretty high above the hawk. Then the crow promptly turned and did a full out dive bomb down right at this hawk. Our breath caught in our throats as we looked on. Well, the crow did give the hawk what appeared to be a solid contact, but both continued their flight unchanged, fortunately. And both birds certainly appeared no worse for the wear. And they seemed to part in peace. This place is positively jumping, full of life of all kinds, in shape, color, texture, sound and sight. We are surrounded by a Land of Plenty and filled to the gills and beyond with so many blessings. What’s up in your neck of the woods?
