Peace Pod for the Day:
Self-Compassion for Recovery:
As a workaholic, I was very hard on myself, always pushing to do more in an effort to feel my own worth. No matter how productive, it was never enough. Learning self-love was the key to my recovery. And since I was so far from self-love initially, my first step was not to be so hard on myself. I started with self-care and self-kindness. But as a teacher coming here to serve others, and a natural giver it felt very selfish; I wasn’t sure it was right or part of my path. Sounds funny to me now but I really felt I had to sneak around and look outside of my teacher’s teachings to find permission to take better care myself. But once I made some progress with this self-love project, I found this amazing quote from Yogi Bhajan. I guess I just wasn’t ready to hear it before. I hope it will help you too. After teaching and coaching thousands of people I now believe that self-esteem, our relationship to ourselves, is the most important thing to work out.
“The highest status which a man can enjoy in a human life is self-compassion. The key to happiness, gate to happiness, is self-compassion. Be extremely compassionate to yourself and do not indulge in any unnecessary nuisance and tax your nerves, your mind, and your life. Definitely be serviceful to others, be kind to others, but always be compassionate to yourself.
I am passionately in love of myself. If I am not passionately in love of myself, I cannot or shall not truly love anybody else. Your friendship won’t last, your relationship won’t last, your marriage, this and that won’t last. Because if you do not have a true passion for life and real compassion for the self, you do not know what life is.” – Yogi Bhajan

Another beautiful spring day broke over us at dawn. Though the morning air is crisp, temps may even venture into the low 80’s(F) today. While some of us humans linger in our houses a little longer, reaching for every bit of slumber to be had on this Sunday morning, the birds and other critters are out and about, heralding in the day and heading out looking for sustenance. A stunning male cardinal stopped by near me for a visit as I took in this morning. What a bright crimson color revealed itself as this bird passed into a sunray falling across the way in front of me! I held my breath in wonder at the countenance and stature of this handsome fellow.
The cardinal brings color and vitality into our lives. Their crimson color, so bright and attractive to the eye, can grab our attention when nothing else seems to be able to and reminds us of the importance of ourselves as individuals in the circle of life. The cardinal’s red color is symbolic of faith, so it can remind us to “keep the faith” though circumstances might look bleak, dark and hopeless. The number twelve is associated with the cardinal as it appears present in all months of the year. Twelve represents the life cycle and regardless of the time of year, the time of day or the time of life we are presently confronting, we are a part of the cycle. We are each a vital element in the circle of life and regardless of where we are in that cycle, we always have the opportunity for restoration, revitalization and renewal.
I am so grateful for rising into this day being able to witness its awakening. I am also grateful for being present to the wakefulness within me. I so love sharing my space with creatures such as the precious cardinal. What’s up in your neck of the woods?

“A human being is part of a whole, called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest…a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us t our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” – Albert Einstein

We have had a number of days now of cool, gray clouds that have been releasing their treasure as sweet, soft rains. This is wonderful moss and fungus growing weather and I have seen my fair share of mushrooms pop up onto the landscape. And everywhere riotous colors burst forth from flowers of so many different descriptions. I took some time to go outside and commune with our beloved Tall Standing Ones, the Winged Ones, the Two-Legged, the Four-Legged, the Swimming Ones, the Creepy Crawlies and all of their allies. This is such powerful medicine for me. I am filled with such a sense of wonder and gratitude. And pure love. For each of you and for all Beings. We are here. Our time is now. Together. We are one. Blessed Be.

“Compassion is not what you do; compassion is who you are. Here is a test of compassion to guide yourself to a more refined and subtle state of understanding compassion. In any interaction, ask this question of yourself: what do you stand to gain and what do you stand to lose in this interaction? Find it out for yourself and move yourself to meditative neutrality. Your ability to be compassionate comes from this place.”
