“’Understand through compassion or you will misunderstand the times.’” So how do you actually do that? We examined before the idea of meeting the existence of suffering with the understanding of compassion, rather than suffering about the suffering. Meeting deep suffering with an open heart actually generates deeper compassion.
What about the existence of evil? An epic story from ancient India may help with this understanding. In the Ramayana, God was said to have incarnated as the universally loved Rama. A terrible monster, Ravana, stole away Rama’s eternal beloved partner, Sita. With the help of the monkey general Hanuman, Rama ultimately slays the evil monster. Upon his death, Ravana’s lieutenant delivers to Rama a pre-written letter from Ravana.
“My Dear Lord Rama, I have always loved You and will always love You. I loved You so much that, before we incarnated in this world, I was the only soul willing to take on the terrible karma of the role that needed to be played in this lifetime. This story needed to unfold, so I was willing because of my love for You to suffer horrible consequences over thousands of lifetimes to come just to play this part for You.”
In this existence in duality, evil arises as the balance to good. The only escape from evil (and the tiring, relentless pursuit of good) is the neutral mind. Things, people, and situations are just the way they are. No need to add a story to the experience. “
