I just love this time of year. It is a season of lessons for me. The leaves readily drop their leaves, knowing well that the time has come when the leaves that sprouted forth in the spring and helped to gather nutrients for the tree throughout the summer have come to the point where they can no longer serve the tree – at least not in this way anymore. The wind nudges, pushes, and tears at the weakest part of the leaf stem, and when the leaf finally dehisces, the wind carries it to the ground, whereupon the leaves gather and protect the tree roots for the winter. Those same leaves then breakdown over time, with the aid of snow, rain, sun, and assorted detritivores recycling and otherwise making available the remaining nutrients locked in those leaves back to the tree. Herein lies the cycle of life, with the wind at the center of it all. For us, the breath, like the wind to the tree, is a central cog in our place in the cycle of life. I just love this time of year. It is a season of lessons for me. Is there something no longer serving you that you can let go of today?
